Starting in September, Hong Kong Academy students began developing their sailing skills at Sai Kung’s own Hebe Haven Yacht Club. Every Wednesday afternoon, students pursued their interests on the water, working closely with the experienced coaches and HKA student leaders. The culminating event for these student sailors was the annual 24 hour sailing race at Hebe Haven on 30th and 31st October 2021.
This annual charity fundraiser sees hundreds of sailors competing for dozens of teams across the water; racing for 24 consecutive hours and raising money for the likes of Sailability Hong Kong, Children’s Cancer Foundation, IDEAL, TREATS and Sai Kung District Community Centre. Our HKA Sail Team had 23 students who rotated shifts, keeping our boat moving for every single second of the 24 hour event!
We eventually finished in second place and raised over $20,000. During the event, we had dozens of parents and faculty members coming down to enjoy the carnival atmosphere and support the team. Our student leaders were recognised for their excellence throughout. The HKA Sail Team is now looking forward to the Inter-School Championships in March.
