Game On for Brain Breaks

By Lynn Lawrence-Brown, Teacher Librarian & Information Literacy Specialist

HKA’s Secondary School Library is abuzz as the “Brain Breaks” zone has been expanded to include a bigger and more comfortable game area. Studies have shown the importance of students having downtime during the school day to cognitively re-charge, socialise and have fun. Students agree. “Games and Brain Breaks are a great way for students to switch off and take a break so that they can better focus in class,” says Grade 8 student Jamila.

In addition to being an important hub for students to refine their critical information literacy skills, through in-class instruction and one-on-one sessions with the SS Teacher Librarian, the Secondary School Library aims to be a community space where students can relax, take a break, read for leisure, and have conversations whether for pleasure or for classwork. After school came back to on campus learning last year, it was important to get students re-socialised, communicating face-to-face and interacting.  Brain Breaks and Games were such a hit during break and lunchtimes that we knew we should extend the initiative. What’s even better is that students are now driving the programme!

“I am excited to be helping to promote ‘Brain Breaks’ as my service project. I like coming up with new activities so we can relax and enjoy,” says Chi Tsing from Grade 10.

“The library is one of my favourite places to hang out – it is a place where I feel calm and relaxed. I am happy to be helping with ‘Brain Breaks’ because I want more people to know about it and enjoy their time in the library. It is a great community space,” adds Grade 10 classmate Lucy.
