Hong Kong Academy is uniquely located in a place of outstanding natural beauty within Hong Kong’s UNESCO Global Geopark. On our doorstep is the well known watersports destination Sha Ha beach, and this is the spot where members of our community gather every year to observe the awe-inspiring Mid-Autumn Festival full moonrise.
Despite our wonderful location, the challenge of plastic pollution is one which Sha Ha beach is affected by with every incoming tide. And so, in support of United Nations SDG 14 : Life Below Water, and to prevent litter from re-entering the ocean and harming wildlife or beachgoers, three of our Grade 12 student leaders recently worked with HKA’s Institutional Advancement team to arrange a beach clean up.
With our Dragonflies banner to mark the gathering spot in place plus bags and gloves ready, a team of roughly 30 community members plus representatives from the WM hotel, spent 90 minutes cleaning the beach and adjacent embankments. 15 large bags of rubbish were collected and disposed of through the WM’s garbage system thereby ensuring that the beach was made clean and safe prior to the picnic and that it was left than cleaner than we found it for all to enjoy!
Beach cleanups are a great way to give back to the community and help protect the environment. If you are interested in joining a beach clean up you can find upcoming events in Hong Kong here.
