I am currently studying a Liberal Arts degree at Birmingham University in the UK. Being a Liberal Arts student means that I can select multiple modules from a broad range of options every semester and build my degree to be very personalised around my strengths and interests. This year I opted for Mandarin, Art History, Urban Planning, Urban Studies and Epistemology. I’m also working on an interdisciplinary core module called ‘Research to Policy’ in which we identify a social issue affecting the population of Birmingham and come up with ways to tackle that issue. At this stage I plan to graduate with a double major and am looking forward to diving into Urban Geography, Urban Anthropology, Ethics & Philosophy modules as well as continuing my Mandarin studies next year.
Completing the IB DP at HKA did wonders for my experience of and ability to handle essay writing, referencing, scheduling and meeting deadlines. I was very well prepared for the rigours of my university academics which means that I have been able to enjoy the transition to independent living and get out to pursue extra-curricular interests and meet people. Each course and department has their own society and the Liberal Arts Society organises meetups, Arts & Crafts events and a year-end ball. The Film Society hosts movie nights and there are regular sales of vintage clothing, plants and records. I am a contributing writer for the student paper, Red Brick, and am also preparing for an upcoming acting role in the Drama Society’s next 48 hour production. Twice a month I join other musicians to jam at the Jazz, Funk and Soul Society night in front of about 200 student fans who come along to every gig. My student accommodation and extra-curricular activities mean that I am meeting people from all over the world and am finding a real sense of belonging in my new community. I can’t wait to begin my second year!
