The Maker’s Atelier
If your child is ready to engage in an after school enrichment of hands-on practical inquiry you may choose to register them for The Maker’s Atelier*. This bespoke Reggio-inspired programme draws upon HKA’s early childhood expertise, world-class through-school facilities and real-life materials to build spatial reasoning, deep ecological empathy and physical mastery.
*The Maker’s Atelier is optional and only available to students enrolled in HKA’s Pre-K class. Contact Admissions for further details.
Practical Inquiry Modules
Guided by our expert faculty, children will participate in a series of six hand-ons practical inquiry projects over the course of the year. Each inquiry project is an in depth exploration rooted in tactile arts and environmental observation.

Regeneration & Gardening
Investigating subterranean soil life, children refine fine motor precision through seed planting. They track seasonal growth cycles, developing deep patience, environmental taxonomy, and interconnected stewardship.
Primitive Pottery & Earth Glazes
This craft connects creators to geology through handbuilding architecture. Working dense clay builds hand strength while revealing molecular phase shifts from pliable mud to permanent stone.

Outdoor Education & Nature-Based Inquiry
Navigating uneven forest terrain builds gross motor resilience and dynamic risk agility. Learners track natural patterns and acoustic ecology, cultivating profound environmental empathy and independence.
Culinary Arts & Food Science
A kitchen lab exploring thermal energy and kitchen chemistry. Children practice manual dexterity by measuring and chopping, observing phase transitions and biological leavening firsthand.

Woodwork and Tinkering
Merging practical physics with material literacy, children build bilateral coordination using real tools. They explore friction, torque, and balance, turning raw lumber into stable structures.
Fiber Arts, Textiles & Heritage Weaving
This tactile art builds fine motor precision and mathematical sequencing. By manipulating tension grids and natural dyes, children transform raw wool into calming, structural textiles.
