Student Support Services

As a deliberately diverse and intentionally inclusive community, we strive to create equitable, accessible and healthy learning environments for all students.

HKA is committed to the belief that learning to appreciate the richness of human differences is essential in an ever-changing world. We have developed an active approach to student support services, including both children and adults in conversations about how we can best meet the needs of every person in our community. Our approaches to Learner Support and English Language Learning ensure that we can provide curriculum interventions and enhancements developed and delivered by educational specialists, and our Counselling and Wellbeing programme recognises the importance of educating the whole child. Each of us contributes to the creation of a safe and supportive educational setting and child safeguarding is recognised as a key responsibility of every community member.

ENSURING SUCCESS FOR ALL

Our culture of openness, community and mutual respect for others is reflected in the range of student support services on offer within our school. These programmes are designed to ensure that all students can thrive in our rigorous and inclusive learning environment and they are integral to our approach to engaging teachers, students and parents in the learning journeys of every child. Our highly collaborative approach to providing learning enhancements maximises expertise, creates capacity and empowers each member of our community to take an active role in contributing to the safety and success of the whole.

Learning Support

The Learning Support team works closely with students, faculty and families, providing students with resources and strategies to help them become self-directed learners. An International Individualised Learning Plan (IILP) is developed for each child accessing our learning support programme. The IILP outlines the goals, resources and strategies that will support the students' success within the learning environment. It is reviewed bi-annually and adjusted to meet the changing needs of the student.

English Language Learners

The goal of our English as an Additional Language (EAL) programme is to accelerate student acquisition of English enabling them to fully access the curriculum.

Language diversity is one feature of our intercultural community. Our students represent over 40 nationalities, and 60% of them speak two or more languages at home. As an English-medium school, we specifically assess for English proficiency during the admissions process when deemed necessary. For any students who are identified for EAL support, EAL specialists work in collaboration with classroom teachers to provide differentiated instruction in order to increase English language proficiency.

Counselling and Wellbeing

We promote a learning environment that empowers individuals to take ownership for their own wellbeing and support the wellbeing of others. Our counsellors and wellbeing teams act as advocates for our students, working in partnership with teachers, administrators and parents to deliver a meaningful and proactive programme. Every child has regular opportunities to focus on developing wellbeing skills and strategies and parents are also actively supported by our counsellors, who host a number of parent-focussed workshops each year.

Child Safeguarding

Based on UNICEF’S Convention on the Rights of Children, and as a CIS-accredited school, HKA prioritises creating a safe and healthy environment for every child.

We take a proactive approach to child safeguarding and have a comprehensive child protection policy and code of conduct that align with international standards and local law. We provide extensive training for the whole staff, including members of our Board of Trustees, external service providers and community volunteers. We also address student peer-to-peer and self-advocacy issues through social skills curricula, health and wellness classes, peer mentoring, child study teams, cyber safety and digital wellbeing, and child empowerment.
