SECONDARY SCHOOL

Grades 6-10

Knowing each individual, personalising instruction and celebrating the whole child are key elements of our robust middle years programme.

The middle years are a time of curiosity and self-discovery for adolescent learners. At HKA, we recognise how important it is to ensure that our students have regular opportunities to explore, question and discover the world around them, as well as to look inwardly as they develop their own sense of identity.

From the moment they enter Secondary School, social and emotional learning is a key focus of every learning experience. Subject area teachers focus on building community in their classrooms, ensuring that every learner feels safe and supported to collaborate and share their ideas. Our Advisory and Wellbeing programmes promote the importance of individual and collective wellbeing, and recognise the many ways students contribute to our dynamic community.

Teaching and learning at HKA is designed to engage students today and prepare them for an unknown future. Through the framework of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP), our teachers curate a globally focussed curriculum that invites students to think critically and creatively. Whether their passion lies in the realm of languages, humanities, sciences, mathematics, athletics, design or fine and performing arts, every HKA student is encouraged to identify their strengths, pursue their interests and determine how they can contribute to their broader communities.

MIDDLE YEARS LEARNING AT HKA

The IB MYP organises teaching and learning into eight subject groups. Within each group, students develop subject-specific skills and understandings that are transferable to a wide range of learning contexts. The concepts identified within the IB MYP subject groups are revisited each year, ensuring that students have multiple opportunities to make connections within and across each subject area.

To bring learning to life in these eight subject groups, our teachers use the following IB MYP drivers to create a globally-minded curriculum:

  • Local and global contexts support students to think critically about information through the lens of global citizenship;
  • Overarching concepts provide relevance and support students to be able to transfer and apply knowledge in various subject areas;
  • Approaches to learning skills help students become more independent and self-directed learners;
  • Service as action empowers students to identify opportunities to make a difference and grow in the process;
  • Language and identity promotes the value of intercultural understanding through the study of multiple languages.

OUR PROJECT-BASED APPROACH

Authenticity and transferability are key to creating meaningful learning experiences that stick with students.

At HKA, our units of study are designed to move students’ thinking out of the classroom and into the world. By applying what they are learning in local, regional and global contexts, HKA students gain a deeper understanding of why what they are studying today will be relevant tomorrow. Our hkaFLOW framework complements what students are studying in their IB MYP subject areas. Students are offered a range of interdisciplinary and project-based learning options through which they can pursue their passions, build their critical thinking and communication skills and grow as reflective and self-directed learners. Our future-focussed approach provides rich, integrated learning experiences for our students and grounds the learning journey in the real world.
