Hong Kong Academy has been awarded Gold status according to the Green Building Council of Hong Kong’s BEAM Plus Rating through October 2025. The BEAM Plus system provides developers with comprehensive criteria for addressing sustainability issues through building design. Recognising the many ways in which we adhere to rigorous environmental operational principles, we were proud to receive full marks in the Innovations and Additions category. This criterion looks at how organisations manage resources and processes within their daily operations and includes building features as well as materials procurement and management.
Notable HKA building features are items such as integrated classrooms and lab spaces, green roofs and skylights, floor to ceiling windows in learning spaces and an air conditioning system which uses displacement ventilation, a system which is more energy efficient and utilises carbon sensors allowing for increased indoor air quality. Resource management practices are elements such as our commitment to purchasing Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved materials and compostable furniture as well as our recycled uniform, water stewardship and – Integrated Building Management System and IoT (Internet of Things) to achieve energy efficiency as well as energy reduction programmes. This award also celebrates our commitment to sustainability through hkaEATS, highlighting its rigorous menu planning, use of composting, eco-drinking programme, food redistribution programme and relationship with the Foodlink Foundation and the importance of our sustainable education programmes including waste and recycling tracking systems to raise awareness and inspire action within our community.
